Jay O'Callahan grew up in a neighborhood called Pill Hill because so many doctors lived there. The magical house and grounds and the dramas of his lively neighbors inspired these colorful stories about Norwegians in the attic, a sausage dog who spoke only Portuguese, salmon in the bathtub and the delicious mystery of x.
These stories were performed and recorded live at the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee in October 2000 and 2002. Glasses is a story about how the war ends for a seven year old boy. It's a story of a little boy who is always breaking his glasses and just about everything else. Sometimes things need to be broken before they can become whole again. Politics is a story of a wild adventure that is to seal a friendship for a lifetime.
World War II comes home to a Nova Scotia fishing village. The Herring Shed is the story of 14-year old Maggie Thomas' keen observations of her own struggles and fears and of her Nova Scotian village of World War II. The characters include the village rector whom no one wants to see because he brings news of deaths in the war. This was recorded at a live concert.
On March 19th 1945, the aircraft carrier, the USS Franklin was bombed by Japanese aircraft. Father Joe O'Callahan and the other heroes on board made the vessel "the ship that wouldn't be sunk."
This story written by Jay O'Callahan lets you experience the plight of the ocean. In "The Spirit of the Great Auk", he recreates Dick Wheeler's 1500 mile kayak voyage from Newfoundland to Buzzards Bay. Time Magazine called Dick "A Hero of the Planet" for his important message.
Forged in the Stars was commissioned by NASA for its 50th anniversary.
Could an Irish Catholic man, a brilliant lawyer from Cambridge, Massachusetts and a Japanese Canadian dress designer become Romeo and Juliet writ large? What happens when in the middle of World War II, the woman you marry is treated like the enemy?
